Apple’s Foldable iPhone May Launch in 2026 — Production Could Begin Sooner Than Expected
New details have emerged about Apple’s long-rumored foldable device, as well-connected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shares fresh insights on the company’s plans. While fans have been eagerly waiting for Apple to join the foldable market, it appears the launch is still some time away — but the groundwork is already being laid.
Production Plans Taking Shape
According to a recent investor note from Kuo, Apple is expected to initiate preparatory work on its first foldable product later this year. Foxconn, Apple’s long-time manufacturing partner, is anticipated to begin official production in the late third quarter or early fourth quarter of 2025. However, final component specifications — including the crucial hinge design — have reportedly not yet been finalized. The hinge in particular seems to be generating confusion within Apple’s supply chain.
Despite the remaining technical uncertainties, Apple has reportedly locked in a display supplier. Samsung Display is set to provide an initial batch of 7 to 8 million panels. But this won’t be the full production volume. Kuo believes the device will see limited production in 2026, with large-scale manufacturing kicking off in 2027. Apple is expected to order between 15 and 20 million units in total.
Given the anticipated high price tag — likely starting at over €2,000 — Apple isn’t positioning this model as a mainstream device. Instead, it will likely target early adopters and high-end users. According to Kuo, the company plans to ship several million units annually in both 2027 and 2028, once mass production begins in the second half of 2026. The first foldable iPhones could hit the market as early as September 2026.
A Premium Design Without the Crease
One of the standout features of Apple’s foldable device, if Kuo’s sources are correct, will be its design. The company is said to be particularly proud of the hinge mechanism, which is expected to be both lightweight and extremely durable. Most notably, the display reportedly lacks the visible crease common in current foldable phones — or it’s so subtle that it’s barely noticeable.
There’s also speculation that Apple’s foldable efforts won’t stop at the iPhone. Larger foldable devices, such as a foldable iPad or MacBook, could also be in development. However, these projects remain unconfirmed.
Still Unofficial, But Momentum Is Building
While Kuo is known for his accurate forecasts, he did caution that Apple’s plans could change until the company officially launches the project. An internal green light from Apple is reportedly imminent, and once that happens, the pace of development is expected to accelerate.
Apple has been exploring foldable technology for years, but unlike competitors such as Samsung, it has taken a more cautious, deliberate approach. With a strong focus on design, durability, and premium build quality, Apple appears to be preparing a product that it hopes will redefine the foldable smartphone segment.
