There will be a lot of new faces in the varsity lineup for the Hartford Union girls tennis team this season.
Coach Andy Andress returns just two players with varsity experience — seniors Olivia Carroll and Casidy Horst.
“Replacing eight varsity spots will be a daunting task this year,” Andress said. “Our graduating class of seniors last year left big shoes to fill. I am excited to see how we gel as a team with such significant turnover. That allows for lots of opportunities for young ladies to step up and show what they can do.”
It is uncertain where Horst and Carroll will end up in the lineup, but there is a long list of upperclassmen to provide them some help.
Seniors Sofie Captain, Annika Csizmadia, Camila Ewing, Alisha Hoefs, Megan Klink and Petra Landon
could fill some holes. Juniors Paige Baizley, Sydney Egan, Steph Gavin, Raechel Gehring, Cassidy Loosen, Gracie Peters, Grace McCune, Elizabeth Unger and Leah Weiss will do the same.
“The first few days of practice have been fun and filled with a lot of learning and eagerness to work,” Andress said. “If the players maintain their enthusiasm and effort we will have a lot of fun and certainly grow as players throughout the season.”
It will take some time for Andress to find the right combinations and
lineups that will provide the most success. Players will need to be versatile throughout the lineup and Andress is relying on Horst and Carroll to power that charge.
“Finding the right doubles combinations will be a work in progress. Olivia and Casidy provide some solid skills and experience at the top of the lineup, so I’m counting on them to anchor our team and show them the ropes,” Andress said. “It will be a fun season to see which players seize the opportunities they will have.”
