Have you noticed our nation is experiencing a resurgence of optimism, the like of which has not been witnessed for a long time? It’s something that cannot be manufactured or stirred up artificially; it happens as a result of perspective.
How do the citizens of this nation perceive the status of their lives? Are they confident that life is good and things are improving? Do they have their needs met and even have things they want? Are they able to provide for their families and see that their children have better lives than they did?
Are they free to go wherever they would like and do whatever they desire? When the responses to these questions are favorable confidence rises. However, there is another aspect of optimism that is frequently overlooked. That aspect is the reason this country exists in the first place — and it is oft forgotten.
That reason: This nation was ‘discovered’ and founded because God had a plan for its existence from before it was discovered, colonized and united as a free nation. Everything lined up, even to using those who would oppress us and exploit us, to accomplish the end God intended. That plan was for this nation He would make great to take the Good News to the rest of the earth.
And that was exactly what we did for many years. America evangelized the continent and the world for centuries. Even though men (and women), being fallible, made a lot of mistakes along the way, the message of the gospel of Christ was spread, even as far as to the moon. However, America has fallen down on the job in the past decades.
Evidence for that is witnessed by the falling numbers in church attendance and churches in this country, as well as the decrease in missionaries sent out throughout the globe. No longer are we the largest Christian sending nation on earth; South Korea eclipsed us in that department long ago. No longer are our children educated in the ways of the Lord and sent out to do the same in other nations.
Instead, we allow Hollywood, educational institutions with an anti- God bias, political correctness and drugs speak into the impressionable lives of the children we’ve been given to steward. We’ve forgotten to teach our children how to reason, choose wisely, obey their parents and respect others, learn to work with their hands to build and create, find satisfaction in a job well done and the reward of peace at the end of a long day.
But the tide is beginning to turn. You see glimmers of evidence in more parents choosing family over ‘me’ or the job; voters showing up at the polls and people running for office who would never have thought to do so in the past; and an increase of saving, rather than spending it all and even spending in advance of earnings.
One additional sign of the turnaround is incrementally greater giving to the poor and disadvantaged, both in this nation and abroad. We’re once again helping without expecting a worldly return on our investment. Once again we’re getting back on the path God ordained for the USA to begin with: be Christ bearers to all the world. As long as we continue on His path, we will continue to ‘prosper and be in good health’ and hope will continue to arise.
